Both the glass and the plastic lenses have advantages and disadvantages.
There is the conception that plastic lenses scratch easier and are not as transparent as the glass ones. In the lines below, we will try to clarify a few aspects regarding these issues.
The plastic lenses are made of different types of special polymers whose optic properties are not below the ones of the medical optic glass, but, in some cases, even superior. Moreover, the polymers do not have their own color, so there is no difference between a plastic lens and a glass one from the aspect perspective. Of course, plastic is a softer material than glass, but using high-quality technology and materials, we protect the lenses with a Duralux hardening layer, considerably improving their resistance to scratches. In daily use, the plastic lenses require a little more attention as the fine dust particles deposited on them may act as an abrasive material in case of dry wiping. Therefore, we recommend washing the lenses under a water jet before wiping them with a microfiber cloth.
Another major advantage of plastic would be the more reduced weight - 40-50% as compared to glass. The density of plastic is twice smaller than the one of glass. At the same time, the superior resistance of plastic to impact may protect your eye in case of unpleasant events.
Esthetically, the plastic lenses present a big plus, unlike the glass ones, as they may be colored in different hues for modern aspect and increased visual comfort. Monochrome hues, shaded hues, contrast increasing hues etc.
On the other hand, the glass lenses also have their own advantages:
The mechanic resistance, except for impact, the glass lenses bearing much higher loads than plastic. Which explains the fact that the glass lenses may be greatly thinned as compared to the plastic ones (in some cases less than a millimeter thick – small diopters or plane lenses)
Glass is more resistant to scratches, but, on the other hand, in extreme cases, it breaks as a consequence of a strong enough impact and there is a risk of eye injuring by the glass fragments.
It is difficult to say which the optimal choice is, depending exclusively on your preferences. What we may assure you is that, irrespective of what you choose, we provide maximum quality.
